Child care
A Backpack Is Only the Beginning
A useful gift belongs within a larger calling: to notice children, listen to them and make room for the patient work of learning and growing.

One exchange in a child's day
A backpack is being shared with a child. Other children and adults stand nearby, with more supplies gathered on the table. The exchange at Tommy's Orphanage brings practical care close enough to recognize: an item chosen, hands reaching toward it and people making time for a child's everyday needs.
There is something human about receiving a useful thing from another person's hands. We understand the thought involved in noticing a need and doing something about it. Such moments can draw us toward the relationships surrounding a child, the people who keep paying attention after the supplies have been put away.
The longer road through school
The Ministry of Education's UDISE+ report for academic year 2025 to 2026 recorded a national secondary school dropout rate of 7.0%, down from 8.2% in the previous year. In this report, the secondary stage covers grades nine through twelve. The improvement is encouraging, while the continuing rate points to work still to be done.
The national picture places everyday educational support within a longer responsibility. Continuing through school requires attention to the stages ahead as well as the needs of today. A child may need materials, encouragement, clear teaching and help navigating a difficult transition. Practical provision has its place within that steady companionship through the years of learning.

Research published by UNICEF in May 2025 gives that challenge a human dimension. In exploratory studies in Bihar and Telangana, children and parents described encouragement from teachers and follow up after absences as important influences on schooling. Their accounts also linked household economic and health difficulties with leaving school.
Their accounts turn our attention toward the people around a child. An explanation may need repeating. A question may take courage to ask. Someone may need to notice that a lesson has been missed and make time to help. The usefulness of a school supply grows within relationships where a child can seek that support.

Jesus made room for children
Mark 10 describes children being brought to Jesus while his disciples try to turn them away. Jesus responds with displeasure at the obstruction. He welcomes the children, speaks about receiving God's kingdom and blesses them. His attention corrects the disciples' sense of who should have access to him.
In the ancient world, children depended on adults and held little public status. That dependence gives Jesus' welcome particular force. The children bring no position of influence to the encounter. Jesus receives them and makes them part of his teaching about the kingdom. Those who seem easy to overlook deserve the community's attention.
That is a searching standard for Christian care. A child deserves to be heard and received before having anything impressive to offer. Respect should surround the child who learns quickly and the child who needs more time, the confident speaker and the one still finding words.
Mark 10Sharon Betsworth on Jesus and childrenAttention to a child's whole life
Across our three homes, we care for 75 children. Behind that shared life is our concern for each child as a person. Children have interests to explore, questions to ask and relationships that matter to them. Thoughtful care makes space for those parts of their lives.
UNICEF India's child protection work emphasizes safety, family support and care appropriate to children's needs. Those priorities invite adults to think carefully about the kind of support a child requires, including the relationships that can be preserved and strengthened. Care deserves thoughtfulness as well as good intentions.

Pentecostal faith makes room for prayerful expectation and the Spirit's work in daily relationships. That expectation can take a patient shape: asking God for wisdom, listening carefully and remaining faithful to ordinary responsibilities. Time spent helping a child understand something difficult can become one small expression of that calling.
Many of us remember an adult who took our questions seriously. The memory may involve a small act, yet the time and attention behind it are often what remain with us.
A backpack has a practical use, and the child receiving it has a life still unfolding. Attention to both belongs within Christian service. We can value what is provided today and remain interested in the person who will use it tomorrow. That continuing interest helps give an act of provision the warmth of a relationship.
