Child care
School Bags and the Everyday Cost of Learning
At Tommy's, a school bag gives a familiar shape to our care for children and the responsibility of helping them prepare for another day of learning.

The things a school day asks for
A school bag passes from an adult's hands toward a child. More bags are gathered together, ready to be shared. At Tommy's Orphanage, this simple act brings a familiar part of childhood into view: having somewhere to put the books and belongings that travel with a child through the school day.
Many of us remember a school bag hanging by the door, the weight of books inside it or the small satisfaction of having everything ready. Parents and grandparents remember the preparation too. A child arriving ready for school often has someone's time, thought and attention behind them.
That familiarity brings the work close. We can understand the usefulness of a bag without needing an extraordinary explanation. The ordinary things of childhood matter because the children who need them matter.
School costs reach beyond fees
India's Comprehensive Modular Survey on Education, conducted from April to June 2025, reported average household spending of 2,002 Indian rupees per enrolled student on textbooks and stationery for the academic year households were asked about. The rupee, shown with the symbol ₹, is India's currency. The figure covers different kinds of schools across the country.
The figure helps explain why the practical side of education deserves attention. Alongside a place in a classroom are books to carry, pencils to find and belongings to look after. Small purchases can recur as children grow and progress through school. Preparing for those needs is part of the patient work of caring for a child.

Being present and being helped to learn
The ASER 2024 rural household survey recorded school enrollment of 98.1% among children ages 6 to 14. Its reading findings showed why enrollment and learning need separate attention. Among third grade children attending public schools, 23.4% could read at least a second grade text.
The rural findings draw attention to the continuing work of teaching and practice. Supplies belong alongside time to read, explanations that make sense and encouragement to keep trying. A bag carries the books into the classroom. The people around a child help create opportunities to understand, practice and discover what those books contain.
ASER 2024: rural learning in IndiaLove that becomes useful
The New Testament treats practical needs with remarkable directness. In 1 John 3, love begins with Christ laying down his life. The writer then brings that great truth into the everyday circumstances of someone who has material resources and sees a brother in need. Love is made visible through a willingness to respond.
Belief in Christ and love for one another shape the life of the believing community. Faith therefore reaches into the way people use what they have and attend to those around them. The kindness of a useful gift can belong to that larger pattern of Christian life, where conviction finds expression in action.
For Pentecostal Christians, dependence on the Holy Spirit belongs within this active love. The chapter also speaks of the Spirit God has given. Prayer, worship and the meeting of a practical need can become parts of the same faithful response to God's grace.
1 John 3Sherri Brown on love in actionA beginning that needs company
A UNICEF study published in 2025 listened to children and parents in selected communities in Bihar and Telangana. In these exploratory studies, participants described supportive teachers, encouragement and follow up after absences as important influences on schooling. Their accounts give practical attention a human dimension: someone notices, someone asks and someone takes time.
Its wider lesson is useful: children need people who keep paying attention. Provision can be thoughtful and immediate, while education asks for continuing relationships. Someone has to explain the difficult paragraph, notice the missing lesson and offer another chance to try. The quiet repetition of such attention can give practical care its depth.
UNICEF research in Bihar and TelanganaAn ordinary need deserves our attention
Our child care work began in 2000. Today, our three homes care for 75 children. Meeting everyday needs is part of that continuing responsibility. A school bag is a visible contribution within the longer work of helping children grow, learn and take their next steps.
A school bag is useful because tomorrow will contain ordinary tasks. There will be things to carry, things to remember and things still to learn. To take those needs seriously is to take childhood seriously. Christian compassion grows more attentive when it makes room for that ordinary tomorrow and for the child who will meet it.
